The Hance Park Master Plan

In addition to Hance Park Conservancy’s efforts to foster strong community engagement in support of the park, HPC works in partnership with the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department and Phoenix Community Alliance in a fundraising effort that will result in the realization of the Hance Park Master Plan adopted by the City of Phoenix in 2014.

In 2013, the City of Phoenix hired an international design team comprised of !melk, Weddle Gilmore, and Floor Associates to reimagine Hance Park. The goal of the redesign is to redevelop Hance Park into a vibrant urban park and signature destination that becomes a catalyst for positive change in the community. The Master Plan evolved over time and is now in its design implementation phase, led by noted landscape architecture firm, Hargreaves Jones.

Master Plan Phase 1 Components

The new Hance Park will be divided into three primary zones – a series of breathtaking, integrated entryways and shade initiatives:.

  • Zone 1: The Valley. Closer to the downtown neighborhoods west of Central Avenue, the Valley is the tranquil, family-oriented zone of the park.

  • Zone 2: The Canyon. Consolidated around Central Avenue, the Canyon is the beating heart of Hance Park. The urban plaza features a splash pad, multiple gardens, jumping fountains, and a cuisine center, while pedestrian and bike lanes connect and pulse throughout the entire park.

  • Zone 3: The Plateau. The third zone will feature a performance space for large and small arts and culture events. Plenty of outdoor lawn space makes the Plateau the perfect location to host large events and activities.

“Hance Park can become a key venue for cultural and entertainment programming as well as a destination in its own right – the kind of public space that is integral to every thriving urban core in the country.”
